Forbes Names San Luis Obispo Among the 25 Best Places to Retire in 2026
San Luis Obispo continues to earn national recognition, this time landing on Forbes’ 2026 list of The 25 Best Places to Retire If You Love Arts, Fine Dining and the Outdoors.
After evaluating nearly 1,000 locations across the country, Forbes selected 25 destinations based on lifestyle opportunities and quality-of-life factors, including outdoor recreation, healthcare access, air quality, walkability, and climate-related risks.
San Luis Obispo stood out for its exceptional access to outdoor activities, from coastal water sports and fishing to hiking and biking. Its Central Coast location, scenic surroundings, and highly walkable and bikeable community make it particularly attractive to those seeking an active retirement lifestyle.
While the area’s median home price exceeds $1 million, its lifestyle offerings continue to attract retirees looking to make the Central Coast their home.
The article also features Lindsey Harn of Christie’s International Real Estate Sereno, who discusses the impact of expanded flight options at San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport on buyers relocating to the area. Harn estimates that more than 80% of buyers purchasing higher-priced properties around San Luis Obispo are moving in or considering a move for retirement.
San Luis Obispo’s inclusion highlights what makes the Central Coast such a desirable place to call home: natural beauty, recreation, accessibility, and a lifestyle that appeals well beyond retirement.
